Refinishing tile without tearing it out is possible and far cheaper — but not on every surface.
It does work, with conditions
We refinish tile in kitchens and bathrooms with results that last years. But there are surfaces where we do not recommend it, and we would rather say so before starting.
Where it works well
- Kitchen backsplashes and surfaces that do not take direct water.
- Bathroom walls outside the shower area.
- Tile in good shape, well bonded, with no loose pieces.
Where we do not recommend it
- Shower pans and floors: wear and constant water win every time.
- Tile with moisture behind it. Painting over hides the problem and makes it worse.
- Loose pieces or failing grout: repair first, paint after.
What decides whether it lasts
Preparation. Degrease, sand for bite, apply a bonding primer, and only then the finish. Skipping any one of those steps is what makes the paint let go six months later.
Tile does not forgive a rush: what fails is never the paint, it is the prep.
