Gulf light changes a color completely. Here is what we look at before recommending a palette.
On a Gulf-facing wall, expect a mid-tone colour to look roughly two shades lighter than the swatch and a saturated one to fade visibly within 3 to 4 years. Colour choice on the coast is not a taste decision with a technical footnote — the light and the salt do half the choosing for you.
Why does the swatch never look like the wall?
Because you are comparing a 5 centimetre chip held under a shop light with 40 square metres under 2,000 hours a year of direct Florida sun. Reflected light off white sand and off the water adds a second source most inland houses never get, and it flattens contrast.
The fix is not a bigger swatch. It is a test patch of at least one square metre on the actual elevation, looked at three times: morning, midday and an hour before sunset. Almost every colour that gets rejected after painting would have been rejected at 5pm on the test patch.
Which colours actually hold up near the Gulf?
- Whites and off-whites — the safest coastal choice and the reason the 30A corridor is full of them. They reflect heat, hide salt bloom between washes, and fade almost imperceptibly.
- Soft greys and greiges — hold their character well; watch the undertone, because a grey with a blue undertone reads much colder against water than it does inland.
- Deep blues and greens — beautiful and demanding. Saturated pigments are the first to break down under ultraviolet light, so budget a shorter cycle or keep them for shaded elevations and front doors.
- Anything with a red or orange base — the shortest-lived of all. On a south-facing wall it can shift noticeably in two summers.
Does the sheen matter more than the colour?
For durability, yes. On exteriors we use satin on the body and semi-gloss on trim and doors: a slightly higher sheen sheds salt and water instead of holding it, and it washes down without burnishing. Flat exterior paint looks lovely for one season and then holds every mildew spore that lands on it.
